Obituary for Clement Crowley

Clem Crowley was born August 16, 1923 in Avoca, Minnesota, the fourth child of James and Mary (Farrell) Crowley. He grew up in Avoca and graduated from Slayton High School in 1941. Clem attended Winona State Teachers College and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in World War II with the 100th Infantry Division, 397th Regiment and received a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement. Following the war, Clem enrolled at Creighton University where he earned a BS in Pharmacy degree in 1950.

That same year, Clem married Joan Doyle, a RN at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs and the daughter of James and Adeline Doyle of Neola, Iowa. Clem’s first job in pharmacy was with the Food and Drug Administration in Minneapolis. Within a few years, a career opportunity led Clem, Joan and their young family to Neola where they established the Crowley Drug Store. The store not only served the community for 34 years, but it was where Clem and Joan taught their children how to be of service to others.

Following his retirement in 1992, Clem stayed active visiting his children, grandchildren and other family members, faithfully following the Creighton Bluejays basketball team, listening to Irish music and having an occasional pint at The Dubliner. Clem’s smile, charm and genuine interest in people opened the door to many friendships. We all considered him our best friend.

Clem was preceded in death by his wife and parents; siblings, James (Marie) Crowley; Virginia (Bill) Sabinske; Norb (George) Costa; Marjorie (Ralph) Tentinger; and Rose (Don) Paal.

He is survived by his seven children: Dr. Kevin (Lynn) Crowley of Gulf Shores, Alabama; Ann Crowley, of Omaha; Jim (Jennifer) Crowley of Centennial, Colorado; Dr. Tim (Celann LaGreca) Crowley of Omaha; Tom (Dede) Crowley of Omaha; Pat (Efren) Serra of Santa Cruz, California; and Dr. John (Lori) Crowley of St. Paul, Minnesota; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
