Obituary for Van Lobendo

Van Lobendo, age 90, joined his wife Donna of 70 years in heaven on January 5, 2019. After several years of taking care of Donna before she passed in February 2017, he was able to live independently in his home up until the past two weeks.

Van Everett Lobendo was born in Bentley on January 15, 1928 to his parents Sam & Bessie Lobendo along with his siblings Woodrow (Woody/Beef), Cyril (Flip), and Darlene (Sharrett).

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, brother-in-law Bill Sharrett, and most recently his beloved niece Sandy (Sharrett) Feller.

Van graduated from Underwood High School in 1946 and then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated the Council Bluffs Hatchery for 30 years. Upon selling the Hatchery and retiring, he went to work at Walmart for 5 years in the Pet Department. He then enjoyed driving shuttle buses for Bluffs Run, Harrahs, and Horseshoe Casinos until he was 81.

Van & Donna were long time members of Westminster Presbyterian Church and served as Elders and Deacons. He had strong Christian beliefs that allowed him to join Donna in eternal life.

Survivors include children, Stanley Lobendo (long-time partner Jackie Manley), Dani Gresham (husband Larry & his family) and their former spouses/parents to his six grandkids: Darla Lobendo (long-time partner Ron Meyers) and Denny Gilmore (wife Dorinda); six grandchildren: Chad (Robin) Lobendo, Gina Lobendo (husband Tony Licht), Jami James (husband Jason), Staci Gilmore Sullivan (husband Michael), Christina Gilmore Mobley (husband Richy), and Patrick Gilmore (husband Ross Gatwood); fourteen great-grandchildren: Christian/Brytani/Logan/Avery/Ellianna Lobendo, Madeleine & Alyssa Licht, Andrew & Laney Jo James, Emma & Maddy Mae Sullivan, Justin/Jenna/Jonathan Mobley; two great-great-grandchildren, Hadley and Oliver Lobendo and their mother, Trish Wickwire; sister-in-law, Betty Joslin and numerous nieces and nephews, including his sister’s children, Roy Sharrett & Bev Sharrett Dumont; beloved long time neighbors, Greg & Debbie Reese, Jack & Bonnie Marx, and Mark & Lucy Collins.
