Obituary for Rev. John Northwall

John Northwall, son of George Pribbernow and Ada Malkowsky, was born on May 25, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri. At the age of 6 months, he was adopted by Walter and Edna Northwall of Essex, Iowa who gave him a loving home and family. He passed away at Rison Son Christian Village on June 8, 2019 at the age of 92 years and 14 days. John was baptized on March 20, 1928. On June 1, 1941 he was confirmed in the Christian faith in the Essex Mission Church. He attended country school and graduated from Essex High in 1944. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1948 and then attended Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa and graduating in 1951. He was ordained at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City on June 3, 1951. He continued his education and received a Master of Arts from the University of Denver, a Master of Divinity from Wartburg Seminary and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Colorado.

He was married to Naomi Ruth Ohrtman at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, Iowa on June 10, 1951. The couple began their ministry in Illinois and have served in churches in Nebraska and Colorado. In 1968 John became a member of the faculty of Dana College in Blair Nebraska. In 1979 Abiding Savior Lutheran Church was organized and they served there until John’s retirement in 1991, although he continued to serve as a visitation Pastor in Omaha. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Karl, Susan, Luke and Karen.

John served on the Board of Publication of the American Church (Augsburg Publishing House). He was also on the Boards of Oaks Indian Mission and the Blair School Board. He has served on many stewardship and evangelism committees. He was active in Boy Scouts as a Scout Master and his involvement in education was a great interest in his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents and adoptive parents; his wife; his daughter, Susan Northwall Calusic and three grandchildren, Amy Northwall, Paul Calusic and Christopher Wadle.

He is survived by Karl (Jean) Northwall, Luke (Renee) Northwall, Karen (Brian) Alper; 8 grandchildren, John Northwall, Anne Marie (Joe) Hutchinson, Lisa (Gregory)Wochos, Carla (Chad) Rizzardi, Lindsey (Matt) Lind, Robin (Jim) Reber, Andrew (Staci) Northwall, Reagan (Eric) Beck, great grandchildren, Ruby Hutchinson, Moses Hutchinson, Lila Hutchinson, Anabel Hutchinson, Clara Lind, Annette Lind, Adelynn Beck, Gannon Beck, John Northwall, Ava Wochos, Nora Reber, Michael Northwall, Christopher Northwall, Isla Wochos, Carson Rizzardi and Owen Reber, brother-in-law and sister, Jerry and Jean Killion.
