Obituary for Leola Mae "Poppy" Poppen

Leola Mae “Poppy” Poppen, age 92, passed away, August 4, 2019 at Northcrest Care Center.

Leola was born May 19, 1927 to Mary Jane (Harris) Nelson and Victor Nelson, in South Sioux City, Nebraska. The family moved to Sioux City, Iowa when Leola was five and that is where she graduated from high school.

Poppy worked in retail for many years before entering the medical field first at St. Vincent’s in Sioux City. Then, Poppy moved to Omaha and worked at St. Joseph’s for 10 years, Methodist for 28 years and Clarkson. Furthermore, Poppy exemplifies volunteering. Poppy served as president of Omaha’s Parents without Partners, vice-president of Sioux City PTA, and was a caregiver for the aged at Presbyterian Outreach, SW8 Agency on Aging and Connections. Additionally, Poppy helped Glenwood Elementary School as a grandma mentor for kindergarten through third grade students.

Poppy is preceded by two daughters, Dawn Marie Poppen and Sally Ann Stegall. Also two brothers and a sister preceded her; they are James, Truman and Mary Jean Nelson.

Leola is survived by her son, Thomas Paul Stoffer (wife Vicki) and son, Michael Poppen (wife Linda). There are 8 grandchildren, countless great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Poppy was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church and loved caring for people, quilting, and cats.
