Rex Roy Butler passed away July 25, 2010 at Bethany Lutheran Home. He was born near Atlantic, Iowa and attended schools in Lewis & Atlantic graduating from Atlantic High School in 1940. He served in WW II in the European Theater of Operations, was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. After his discharge he became an office machine repairman. He worked in that capacity at the Union Pacific Railroad Headquarters in Omaha, NE for 32 years, retiring in 1983. He married Shirley Shepperd in 1947 at Dietz Memorial Methodist Church in Omaha, NE. They lived in Council Bluffs and McClelland, Iowa and spent winters from 1988 to 2006 in Arizona and New Mexico. He had lifetime membership in VFW and DAV and belonged to the UP Old Timers Club. When living in McClelland he served on the city council and the McClelland Fire Department. He is survived by wife Shirley, three sons, Roger and Cindy, Mark and significant other Janet Hindt and Craig. He is also survived by sister, Betty Conklin of Atlantic, brother, William of Sun City West, AZ, grandchildren Judy Fuller and husband Scott, Karen Butler mow serving in the US Navy and Cheryl Butler, Jamie Hindt; great grandchildren Michaela and Natosha Fuller and nieces. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert, sister, Ruth who died in infancy, sister, Maxine Miller and Phyllis. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel with Rev. Aaron Simons officiating. Memorials are suggested to the family.
